SUMMARY:Berkeley Death Cafe - Navigating End-of-Life Choices
DESCRIPTION:Traditional Death Cafes bring people together to discuss death in an open\, unstructured way. You are invited to a special Death Café that differs from our traditional Death Café format. Instead of open conversation\, this learning session features presentations from three experts in end-of-life care\, followed by Q&A. \nReina Galanes\, Board member with End of Life Choices California (EOLCCA)\, will present on legal end-of-life options\, including medical aid in dying (MAID) and voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED). \nSarah Hill\, a Bay Area end-of-life doula\, will share how she helps individuals and their constellation of care navigate end-of-life transitions with clarity and compassion. \nGabby Jimenez is a hospice and palliative care nurse\, end-of-life doula\, and death and dying educator. She will share insights on preparation versus reacting\, the head-hands-heart approach\, and practical guidance on navigating palliative and hospice care options. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged.

SUMMARY:180 Days. To Die. To Live. - November 24\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:180 Days. To Die. To Live is the story of two peoples’ end-of-life trajectories through the lens of the narrator. Focused on their last six months\, the narrator’s husband\, Richard\, and her friend\, Shelley\, were both diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Richard chose seven rounds of chemotherapy treatment. Shelley chose no treatment. Both opted to use California’s end-of-life option. \nAlthough legalized in California in 2016\, many Californians still don’t know the end-of-life option exists. Through these stories\, the play also addresses what it takes to be eligible for this option and the sometimes difficult navigation through the healthcare system. \nThe seemingly somber\, “comic” relief is provided by the narrator\, the widow\, a cancer survivor herself\, who is busy learning qigong and other modalities to do her best to stay cancer free and healthy during and through her grief-stricken time. Ultimately\, this play is about the choices faced and possible during one’s end-of-life\, traversing the personal\, to the health care options and to the legalities. \nMembers of End of Life Choices California’s Board of Directors will participate in post-performance talkback sessions with the audience and cast of the play. \n\nNovember 10 – Stewart Florsheim\, Board Vice President\nNovember 16 – Adrian Byram\, Board Secretary\nNovember 22 – Bob Brody\, MD\, Board President\nDecember 1 – Reina Galanes\, PhD\, Board Member\nDecember 7 – Sue Gess\, PharmD\, Advisory Council\nDecember 8 – Judith Bishop\, RN\, Volunteer\n\nCost: \nGeneral Admission = $25-35 (sliding scale) \nReserved Seating = $50-100 \nDiscount Code = EOL for $20 tickets \nBuy tickets online \nBox Office (tickets by phone): \n415-282-3055 \nMon-Fri 1:00-4:00 PM \nQuestions: Contact Speaker@endoflifechoicesca.org

SUMMARY:180 Days. To Die. To Live. - November 22\, 2024
